Free People, Free Markets: The Foundations Of Liberty Course

The Independence Institute is proud to offer a first-of-its-kind course on the moral and philosophical case for free market capitalism:

Free People, Free Markets: The Foundations of Liberty!

The class will take place on 5 Saturdays, from 9am to noon, starting June 27th and ending August 1st. (Skips July 4th).

This class is open to everyone. And you may obtain college credit through the University of Colorado at Colorado Springs (Good for credit at CU-Boulder and CD-Denver).

The course makes the moral and philosophic case for free-market capitalism. One of the most important concepts of Western Civilization is the acquisition of property as an unalienable right. The course develops the relationship between economic liberty and political liberty. Participants learn the principles behind wealth-creation. They are introduced to the philosophy of the Austrian School of Economics and its connection to the founding ideas of the American experiment. Participants are awakened to their heritage of economic liberty. It will be more than worth your time.

Classes will meet once a week for five weeks, from 9-12 on Saturdays (skipping July 4). The course is designed for business and community leaders, college students, and the general public. If desired, you may obtain three college credits through the University of Colorado at Colorado Springs by paying the usual college per-credit fee.

Come if you love liberty. Come if you love collectivism, but need to understand the libertarian position. Come if you want to receive an inexpensive, thorough, and energetic exposure to the founding principles of economic and political liberty.

Denver Gadsden Society Freedom Rally Video Recap

Face the State interviewed the Gadsden Society:

The Gadsden Society is named after Sons of Liberty member Christopher Gadsden, the original designer of the yellow "Don't Tread on Me" flag that become a symbol of liberty during the revolutionary era. The society was founded by Dave Williams, legislative director for the Libertarian Party of Colorado, political activist and blogger Lenina Close, and Wesley Dickinson of the People's Press Collective. They are hoping to fill an existing void for a pro-liberty voice at the Capitol and provide testimony on bills moving through the legislature.

"The Gadsden Society is going to focus on trying to change policy on the state level," Williams told Face the State. "A lot of the statewide organizations like the Independence Institute are prohibited from lobbying because of tax rules. We are filling that void as a non-partisan, non-profit, public advocacy group."

The rally will be held Sunday, March 1 at 2 p.m. and will feature Aurora City Councilman Ryan Frazier, CU Regent Tom Lucero, and political activist Ross Kaminsky as keynote speakers. Williams' hope for the rally is to "let people who still believe in smaller government and liberty know that they aren't alone."

Navy SEAL Danny Dietz Memorial Sculpture Dedication July 4

A photo of Danny Dietz serving in Afghanistan, where he was killed on June 28, 2005. The sculpture is based on this photo. Dietz and three other Navy SEALs were ambushed by al-Qaeda guerrillas. Dietz, 25, severely wounded, fought off attackers for more than 45 minutes, allowing one of his team members to escape.

Dietz received the Navy Cross, the Navy's second-highest medal.

This Fourth of July, Coloradoans should honor and remember Navy SEAL Danny Dietz--who gave all and will be honored with a statue in his hometown (and reports are coming in that Littleton is expecting large crowds):

The American flag hung motionless in the hazy, breezeless sky, a solemn red-white-and- blue reminder of the man who had sacrificed his life for it two years ago to the day.

Among them was state Sen. Steve Ward, who not only represents the Dietzes' district, but who, as a Marine Corps colonel, was stationed at Bagram for two years himself. It was Ward who obtained the flag for the Dietz family.

"He was a brave man who died tragically and heroically," said Ward, alluding to Petty Officer 2nd Class Danny Dietz being posthumously awarded the Navy Cross - the nation's second-highest military honor - for his bravery in the face of fierce combat.

The same flag that honored Dietz will be used Wednesday at the July Fourth dedication ceremony of a statue of him that will be held in Littleton's Berry Park extension.

But Littleton Police Chief Heather Coogan wasn't thinking a week ahead as she watched the ceremony.

"This demonstrates that we have so many fine young people who have such a strong sense of duty, honor and patriotism," said Coogan. "Being here to watch this just feels absolutely right."

After a long minute, Garcia slowly began lowering the limp flag.

But halfway down, a quicksilver breath of wind caught it. And suddenly, for several blinks of the eye, there it was, spread against the sky: a 3-foot-by-5- foot piece of red-white-and-blue cloth that represented something for which a Colorado warrior was willing to give his life.
