It's a shame that real liberals and real conservatives aren't getting together on the border issue. I think we should really agree, both about the importance of the problems and the fact that neither party is gonna do anything about it. For obvious reasons, of course.

Would you agree that the most viable solution is to vastly increase the fine of a company caught hiring illegals? As we know from our experience with the Drug war and prohibition you can't solve a demand problem by curbing supply. Raise fences all you want- we need to make it unprofitable for businesses to take the risks.

Part of a comprehensive immigration policy would be enforcement of current laws and punishments for those who hire illegal immigrants, thus driving up the incentive to come. If the fines are not sufficient, then increase them.

Border security would also involve fences that increase the country's ability to know the comings and goings of individuals crossing the border--we do it at airports, why not the border?

With strong disincentives against hiring, I'm not sure a wall would be needed. The next step would be to fight against the Neoliberal programs which are deepening and sustaining the poverty in Latin America. As well as the neoliberal programs which are harming our American workers and making us vulnerable to cheap-labor competition.
