Terri Schiavo's "Widower" Michael Schiavo Campaigns In Colorado
**Update**
The predictions below of Michael Schiavo's political career were dead on, according to the Orlando Sentinel:
Schiavo has remarried, co-authored a book titled "Terri: The Truth" and has said he is determined to develop a political career.
"Widower" Michael Schiavo visited Colorado to shill for Angie Paccione, running in the 4th District, and Peggy Lamm, running in the 7th, and infusing Terri Schiavo into Colorado's November election (video):
At a news conference in Denver Wednesday, widower Michael Schiavo announced he's stepping back into the media spotlight for personal reasons. The debate last year brought emotional reactions from all sides, and since this is not the focus of this post, there will be no further discussion about it here--though the comments are open. Reasonable people can disagree completely on the role of the government in such a case, and other can make their own judgments on the status of Michael Schiavo regarding his late wife.
"I'm not a political person, but I'll stand behind anybody who believes that government should not be in our personal business," said Schiavo.
Schiavo is touring the country, taking aim at several members of Congress for their efforts blocking his decision to remove his wife's feeding tube.
"They're there to do a job and run the country, and half of them can't even do that, why do they need to put their noses in our personal business?" said Schiavo.
Among Schiavo's targets, Colorado Congresswoman Marilyn Musgrave, Texas Congressman Tom Delay, and Tennessee Senator Bill Frist.
Schiavo plans to travel to those other states if necessary.
Most striking was the reaction from a mother whose child has been on life support since childhood:
However, during his Colorado campaign event, a mother in the front row took objection to Schiavo's political involvement. What is interesting is that, like Cindy Sheehan, Schiavo is using a profoundly "personal" experience to go public with political and ideological platforms and campaigns, offering support to leftists and Democratic candidates in opposition to those horrible GOP/conservatives who launch wars based on lies and believe that in cases where there is a dispute in absence of clear living will arrangements, to err on the side of life. They are evil and must be stopped!
Linda Evans Shepherd is the parent of a 20-year-old woman on life support after she was injured during a car accident as a baby.
"I mean he says rights of privacy for himself, but what about her (Terri's) mom?" said Shepherd.
"As a mom of a disabled adult, my heart went out to that family," said Shepherd.
Shepherd says Schiavo's story became the country's business in the name of a right for life.
"As an international speaker, I have women roll up to me in their wheelchairs and say to me, 'I have brain damage too, and I'm afraid they're going to kill me next'," said Shepherd.
Perhaps he can parlay his "grief" into a book deal, regular television interviews, and more fringe benefits from his 15 minutes of fame just as Sheehan is, fame which apparently he hadn't intended on relinquishing last year, when the drama unfolded and he became the cause célèbre or Anti-Christ (depending, once again, on your point of view).
2 Comments:
Glad you used quotes around widower. I don't consider him a widower. He left that marriage (to Teri) and committed to another woman long before Teri was died in that brutal and drawn-out fashion.
Go away Michael Schiavo, we've seen enough of you! Same with Cindy Sheehan and her courageous 'fasts'.
He's already got a book but these politics should help him to sell more.
