"Wildlife Commission Approves Of Device That Blows Up Prairie Dogs"

You can't rephrase a title like that--and what is this splendid little device called? A RODENATOR:

DENVER - Colorado's Wildlife Commission voted Thursday to allow private landowners to control prairie dog populations by using an explosive device.

Many farmers and ranchers were hoping commissioners would make it legal to use a device called the Rodenator.

It blows an explosive mix of propane and oxygen into a burrow. A spark then ignites the gases.

"I think it's important for people to know this is not a recreational device. This is a device for agricultural producers here in Colorado," said Division of Wildlife spokesperson Tyler Baskfield.

Remember kids, don't try this at home, it is not a "recreational device"!

Of course, not everyone is happy (these people have no sense of humor whatsoever):

However, conservation groups are adamantly opposed to the explosive device as a way to control prairie dog populations. They consider use of the Rodenator to be just plain cruel.

"This is a far cry from anything that could be considered humane," said David Crawford, executive director of Rocky Mountain Animal Defense. "I think if you listen to your heart, if someone proposes a device like the Rodenator you're not going to let it fly."
