The Salazar brothers won by avoiding explicit ties to the Kerry campaign in '04, and remaining outside the image of the posh, elite, Ivy-league liberalism red states despise.

John Kerry won the seventh district by 52%, and that was in a year when they elected Bob Beauprez as their congressman.
Also, not that it matters, but Kerry was born in Colorado.
