Local Islamic Scholars Disagree With Afghan Apostasy Charges

They believe that Islamic injunctions against apostasy are historically rooted, and should be illegal under current conditions.

While I might accept that imposing the death penalty for conversion from Islam might be rare, there is nothing new about Muslim intolerance for other religions. Muslim clerics all over the world subtly encourage their people to remain ignorant and illiterate. They do this so their people cannot make their own choices, but must depend on the sheikhs and the clerics to tell them what is right and accepted. Some of the clerics are themselves illiterate. They are terrified because they know that given information and free choice, many Muslims would leave the faith. And that would be an indictment on both their religion and their culture, which they have intertwined to the point they cannot be separated.

Unfortunately, these local scholars don't seem to appreciate how hard it will be for a vast, literal-minded population to avoid literal readings of that hideous document know as the Koran (video)
